Call for Papers – Thematic Dossier: “Brazil/Mexico: Art Research Corridor desde el Sur”
The call for submissions is now open for Revista Científica/FAP, Vol. 36, No. 1 (Jan–Jun 2027). This online journal, dedicated to the field of Arts (encompassing Visual Arts, Photography, Video Art, Cinema, Dance, Performing Arts/Theater, Performance Art, and Music), is a biannual publication of UNESPAR’s Curitiba II campus. It aims to disseminate articles, reviews, essays, interviews, and translations authored by PhD and Master’s degree holders. In addition to the "Continuous Flow" section (works in the Arts—within the aforementioned sub-areas—without thematic restrictions), the journal is accepting submissions for the Thematic Dossier “Brazil/Mexico: Art Research Corridor desde el Sur,” organized by professors Luiz Eduardo Rodrigues Gasperin (UNESPAR), Gina Monge Aguilar (UNICAMP), Renata Celina de Morais (UFAL), and Matheus Vinícius de Sousa Fernandes (UEMS).
Interest in this dossier stems from journeys undertaken at various stages of educational and investigative paths in the Arts—in dialogue with Mexico—and extends to the possibilities for exchange between research, practices, and experiences developed in Brazil and Mexico. What is known about Mexican territory, and conversely, what is known about Brazil from a Mexican perspective? What do we feel and think about our experiences oriented towards the South? What do we feel and think about building collective resistance and communities? How do we weave all these aspects within our territories?
The first obstacle in our journey is language. We are countries that share the same continent, yet we are constituted through distinct languages: Portuguese, in the case of Brazil, and Spanish, in Mexico. This difference also points to historical processes of colonization that—even centuries after the eras of exploitation and domination—continue to exert influence across political, geographic, economic, educational, cultural, and artistic spheres, perpetuating practices shaped by hegemonic and colonial logics.
In light of this, certain questions arise: how can we overcome barriers and speak together? How can we build dialogic processes through artistic inquiries embedded in a wide variety of languages? How can we foster encounters that enable the circulation of knowledge, practices, and experiences across our territories?
In this context, Indigenous peoples—whose presence predates national borders—reveal significant possibilities for dialogue and reflection regarding alternative forms of existence, creation, and knowledge production. By interweaving these presences, we recognize shared histories of resistance and re-existence capable of challenging colonial narratives and pointing toward different ways of conceptualizing life, art, and the production of knowledge.
These territories invite us to reflect on the technical, methodological, aesthetic, epistemological, and historiographical aspects that shape arts research across its diverse languages. Thus, further questions arise: what fields of interest, engagement, and dialogue are being established within contemporary arts research involving—and originating from—these two countries?
Against this backdrop, Revista Científica/FAP invites researchers holding Master’s and Doctoral degrees to submit work situated at the intersection of shared affects and exchanges, aiming to forge poetic and epistemological networks that transcend barriers of distance and language. By placing artistic practice at the heart of the discussion, the work reinforces the imperative to decolonize ways of seeing, reclaim ancestral roots, and chart sensitive pathways that unite Brazil and Mexico in a constant, dynamic, and emancipatory exchange.
