EXTENSION OF DEADLINE - Call for Papers – Thematic Dossier: Artificial Intelligence and the Arts (Scientific Journal/FAP)
The deadline for submitting papers to the Dossier “Artificial Intelligence and the Arts” of the Scientific Journal/FAP, vol. 34 no. 1 (Jan-Jun/2026), has been extended until February 22, 2026.
This online journal, focused on the arts (including Visual Arts; Photography; Video Arts; Cinema; Dance; Performing Arts or Theater; Performance and Music), is a biannual publication of the Curitiba II Campus (Faculty of Arts of Paraná) of UNESPAR. It aims to disseminate articles, reviews, essays, interviews, and translations produced by PhDs and Masters. In addition to the Continuous Flow (papers in the arts, without thematic delimitation), the Journal will receive papers for the Thematic Dossier "Artificial Intelligence and the Arts," organized by professors André Mintz (UFMG), José Cláudio Castanheira (UFF), Luiza Carolina dos Santos (UTFPR), and Marcio Telles (Unespar).
The recent popularization of artificial intelligence (AI) platforms represents a turning point in the history of cultural production, comparable—with due proportion—to the emergence of photography or the beginning of the digital age. Technologies such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), text-image diffusion models, and Large-Scale Language Models (LLMs) are reshaping creative workflows, aesthetic possibilities, and the very definitions of art, artists, and audiences.
While generative art has a rich historical precedent, with pioneers such as Vera Molnár and Frieder Nake, the scale, speed, and accessibility of current tools present a new and complex scenery. The integration of AI into the arts is marked by a series of productive tensions that deserve in-depth investigation: the dialectic between automation and the amplification of human skill; the conflict between the democratization of tools and the potential devaluation of artistic work; the questioning of authorship in the face of algorithmic unpredictability; the uncritical adoption of technological and/or aesthetic models developed by large corporations; the use, not always with consent, of sensitive user data; and the disconnect between existing legal and ethical frameworks and the new reality of machine-generated content.
More recently, contemporary visual artists have used artificial intelligence as a creative partner to reimagine history and expand artistic production. Refik Anadol, for example, created the work "Unsupervised" with AI, which reinterprets the MoMA image collection. Other artists, such as Giselle Beiguelman and Mayara Ferrão, used technology to create speculative portraits of erased historical figures or to visualize scenes absent from colonial records. This new paradigm shifts the focus from technical execution to conceptual direction, "prompt engineering," and critical curation, demanding new skills and raising fundamental questions.
In this context, the Revista Científica/FAP invites researchers with Master's and PhD degrees to submit papers that reflect on the impacts and role of artificial intelligence in the arts.
