Abstract

The objective of the research was to undertake a systematic literature review on innovation management models in small and medium-sized information and communication technology firms. For this purpose, a bibliographic research technique was utilized, and a Kitchenham protocol was adopted, ensuring the quality of the selected studies. Principal outcomes encompassed the identification of robust innovative strategies that could be integrated into businesses to enhance performance, in addition to the necessity to design innovative and adaptable business models. For qualitative investigations, exploratory-descriptive research was imperative, offering flexibility in methodological procedures and the potential for unexpected findings. Conversely, for quantitative studies, the outcomes centered on pivotal results associated with measuring the innovation success in ICT SMEs, presenting a framework to assess such success through the endorsement of processes and models that can be adopted in other sectors. Final considerations underscored the significance of innovation management in these companies for the inception and development of advanced and unique products and services, highlighting the importance of Bardin's (1977) content analysis methodology for data assessment. The conclusion drawn for quantitative studies emphasized the necessity of a soundly-based sampling strategy, well-defined criteria for the selection of studies, and information extraction, which ascertained a systematic and replicable approach to identify, evaluate, and interpret all pertinent research available on a specific subject.
