Universities have been increasingly demanded to go beyond teaching and research missions and engage with society. Following this movement, there is an evolution of theoretical models. Each model brings with it the context of its creation, both in terms of locality and in terms of temporality, as the debates about the university's engagement with society are constantly evolving. This article discusses the evolution of the understanding of the university's engagement with society based on four models, taking into account their geographical and temporal contexts. The models analyzed are: Entrepreneurial University (Clark, 1998; Etzkowitz, 1983), Civic University (Goddard et al., 2016), Responsible University (Sørensen et al., 2019), and New Flagship University (Douglass, 2016a). Common aspects are noted, such as the importance of engagement with the local / regional economy, but the article shows that each model approaches universities’ engagement with society in a different way.
