This article proposes the analysis of the Brazilian feature film “Nise: The heart of Madness”, released in 2015 and directed by Roberto Berliner. The film depicts a specific moment in the life of the psychiatrist Nise da Silveira, her return to her profession after 8 years of absence. Upon returning to the hospital, Engenho de Dentro, she is faced with cruel “treatments” of electroshock and lobotomy, as well as a reality of neglect towards the clients. Assigned to the occupational therapy sector, the doctor begins to operate significant transformations through art. An analysis of the film is proposed, considering the categories presented by Manuela Penafria, such as content and poetics. To understand how the theme of the film, of highlighting the person and the work of Nise is possibly achieved, the constructions of scenes that evoke emotion and bring symbolism will be analyzed. As pointed out by historian Robert A. Rosenstone, the importance of emotion is perceived in the context of dramatic films that address historical figures. An analysis will be made focused on the sensitive elements and it is also intended to understand how, through the category of visuality mentioned by the historian, the director manages to make the past, the life and work of Nise, significant.
