Considering the trajectory of Jane Campion, one of the seven women who were nominated for the Oscar for Best Direction and the first woman to receive the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in the same category, this research takes as its object of analysis the work The Piano (1993), scripted and directed by the aforementioned filmmaker. The focus of the article will be how Campion builds its main protagonist, Ada Mcgrath, in other words, how the creation of a female character from the eyes of a screenwriter and director constitutes Ada's subversion. The analysis will be carried out from three main aspects that signal the resistance and insubmission of this character: Ada's relationship with the environment, Ada's relationship with the other characters and Ada's relationship with herself. For this, the concept of female gaze presented by Joey Soloway in the master class at the Toronto International Film Festival is used.
