Performer openness strategies and the discourse control procedures

Abstract

This article proposes a critical analysis of the composer/performer relationship based on the ‘emancipated performer’ by Paulo de Assis. The power mechanisms related to division of roles will be historically situated through Michel Foucault’s conceptions of discipline and sovereignty. Subsequently, we analyzed the methodological and artistic propositions based on the conception of Musical Work conceived by Assis. In order to understand the limits and contradictions of Assis approach, we draw parallels between the author’s approach and the discourse control procedures. We believe that such analytical allows us to understand the ordering, delimitation and exclusion mechanisms associated with discursive formations based on the composer/performer relationship.

Author Biographies

Daniel Pizaia, State University of Londrina

He holds a degree in music from the State University of Londrina (2019) and a master's degree in musicology from the Federal University of Paraíba (2022) in the line of History, Aesthetics and Phenomenology of Music. He carried out a Scientific Initiation focused on analysing Glenn Gould's recordings of the Goldberg Variations. In the master's degree, he sought to identify the norms and performative behaviours arising from creative processes linked to John Cage's indeterminacy, the study of composer/interpreter collaboration and the proposition about musical work found in the works of Paulo de Assis. He works as a collaborating member of the CLIC research project at the State University of Londrina, where he studies power relations in the fields of musical analysis and performance through elements of critical and archaeological analysis of Foucaultian matrix.

Fabio Furlanete, State University of Londrina

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music, Composition from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (1997), a Master's degree in Communication and Semiotics from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (2000) and a PhD in Music from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2010). He is currently an assistant professor at the State University of Londrina. He has experience in the area of Arts, with emphasis on Improvisation and Musical Composition, working mainly on the following themes: musical composition, electroacoustics, improvisation, interface and representation.
