Abstract

This text aims to discuss the terms strategies and skills for reading comprehension, as well as to present a compilation of strategies for teaching comprehension in Portuguese as a mother tongue, based on recent studies, especially those carried out in Brazil, filling a gap of few studies in the area. It also suggests fifteen strategies to be used before, during and after reading, which were compiled and adapted for the teaching of Portuguese as a mother tongue. Finally, this research considers that the teaching of strategies can contribute to the improvement of reading comprehension in Portuguese as a mother tongue.
