Abstract

This article proposes to discuss, in a future perspective, the system of address in Brazilian Portuguese, focusing on the alternation between the pronouns “tu” and “você” and the processes of reorganization of the second-person pronominal paradigm. Based on the assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics and Historical Sociolinguistics, it seeks to understand how the expansion of “você”, a form derived from the expression “Vossa Mercê”, affects verbal agreement, the use of oblique pronouns, and the possessive system in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese. The study proposes a reflection directed to Secondary Education, especially the 2nd year of high school, articulating linguistic description and pedagogical practice. It is argued that the coexistence of “tu” and “você” does not represent instability or grammatical inadequacy, but rather a structured linguistic system, historically constituted and conditioned by social, regional, and pragmatic factors. The methodological proposal seeks to investigate, from a future perspective, the use and perception of these forms in the school context, contributing to the development of students’ sociolinguistic awareness
