Abstract

The curricular matrices of undergraduate courses in natural sciences of two higher education institutions in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ were analyzed. The objective was to examine the existence of disciplines with neuroscientific knowledge content.  The distribution of subjects, the workload and the presence of essential neuroscience content for initial teacher training were evaluated. The research has a qualitative approach, using document analysis based on the course syllabus. The results reveal the absence of neuroscience topics in science teacher training courses, despite the existence of related disciplines and the requirement of the National Common Curriculum Base. Thus, it is necessary to reformulate the curricular matrices of these courses so that future teachers have access to knowledge about the biological bases of the brain to provide improvements in teaching and promotion of more fruitful learning environments.
