Abstract

The primary goal of gamification is to drive participant engagement through the application design principles used in games. In the context of this paper, gamification meant introducing thematic 3D models in order to teach students about ion-aligned bonds (an "ionic puzzle"). We hope to improve attitudes towards and understanding of abstract chemistry concepts by using 3D printers to create visual models of the chemical elements. This creative method holds much promise in special education, making it possible to incorporate students with a variety of cognitive and visual abilities into the curriculum.
