Although the oral expression in a foreign language represents the objective of many students, it is generally excluded from the classrooms of the basic education, for many reasons. Nonetheless, that ability is considered a mandatory aspect for the approval of the didactic collections at the “Programa Nacional do Livro Didático” (PNLD). This paper analyses the treatment given to the oral expression for the Spanish collections of the “Ensino Fundamental” approved at PNLD 2017. We take into account the papers of Lima (2011) and Pinho (2011) to confirm the importance given to oral skills by the students and the official documents in order to analyze the necessity of including the oral practice in the classrooms of the “ensino fundamental”. When we analyze the collections, we observe a practice that values the work with genres and that it follows a division into stages, that values the preparation and contributes to the increase of various kinds of knowledge. We conclude that the inclusion of the foreign languages in the PNLD has brought great advances to the oral practice, but, from the present analyses, we observe items that still need more deepening.
