Resumo

No ensaio, Kofi Agawu aborda a relação entre o tonalismo – entendido como "sistema hierarquicamente organizado de relações entre alturas" – e a música africana. A partir de diferentes exemplos e em diálogo com contribuições dos estudos decoloniais e da etnomusicologia, Agawu desenvolve uma interpretação crí­tica que busca compreender como aspectos da imaginação musical africana responderam à violência colonial imposta a partir de uma linguagem harmônica estrangeira. Após três momentos, em que busca respectivamente expor (1) aspectos do tonalismo na música africana da atualidade, (2) aspectos do pensamento tonal africano pré-colonial e (3) elaborações composicionais de criadores africanos, o autor conclui o texto tecendo considerações sobre o tonalismo como força colonizadora, defendendo uma revisão de prioridades no estudo das músicas do continente e enaltecendo os processos de resistência originários da África.

Biografia do Autor

Kofi Agawu, City University of New York

Kofi Agawu nasceu em Gana, onde recebeu sua educação inicial antes de estudar composição e análise – no Reino Unido – e musicologia – nos Estados Unidos. Sua pesquisa é voltada í  análise musical em repertórios selecionados da Europa Ocidental e do Oeste da África. Ele é o autor de cinco livros e numerosos artigos e estudos. Ele foi Teórico Musical em Residência para a Sociedade Flamengo-holandesa de Teoria Musical, em 2008-2009, e Professor Visitante da cátedra George Eastman da Universidade de Oxford, em 2012-2013.

José Henrique Padovani é compositor e pesquisador nos campos da Sonologia, Composição e Teoria/Análise Musical. Atualmente é Professor Adjunto na Escola de Música da UFMG e atua como professor/pesquisador nos Programas de Pós-Graduação da Escola de Música da UFMG e do Instituto de Artes da Unicamp. É membro do Grupo de Pesquisa em Sistemas Musicais Interativos da UFMG (LaPIS) e dirige, atualmente, o Centro de Pesquisa em Música Contemporânea, da Escola de Música da UFMG.
