Dialogues between gender performativity and artistic performance in the work of Ana Mendieta

The present article aims to explore dialogues and intersections between gender performativity and artistic performance. Understanding gender through the lens of performativity — as theorized by Judith Butler — that is, through language, gesture, and corporeality, this research proposes to consider artistic performance, also anchored in the body and its movements, as a force capable of unsettling gender norms. From a territorially situated perspective, this work examines the life and production of Ana Mendieta and how, in her performative practices, she confronts the transgressions of “being” a woman. This approach, centered on the artist’s work, allows the discussion to unfold from a non-universalizing logic of gender and artistic practice.
