Abstract

This essay proposes an investigation into the relevance of printmaking in contemporary art, in dialogue with other authors, analyzing traces of its historical trajectory and its relationship with other arts and media. Starting with the analysis of printmaking in the context of print culture, its insertion in contemporary art, marked by post-disciplinarity, where printmaking and printed arts have become increasingly ubiquitous in global art, establishing complex dialogues with other artistic languages, such as photography, video art and installations, is explored. Without intending to exhaust the subject, some reflections are made on issues such as the ubiquity, invisibility of printmaking and the “death of print”; the post-media/post-disciplinary/post-printed artistic world; the relationship between printmaking and new technologies; characteristics of printmaking such as contact, reversion, repetition and dissemination; redefinitions of printmaking and its contaminations; and the expanded field of printmaking. The relationship between printmaking and other arts and media has been fundamental to its revitalization, expanding its boundaries and consolidating its role in contemporary art. Contemporary Brazilian printmaking is considered to be a dynamic and diverse field, and the appreciation of artisanal production, combined with the exploration of new expressive possibilities, sets a promising scenario for its future. Through an analysis of contemporary works, the article examines how printmaking continues to be a relevant expressive medium, challenging disciplinary boundaries and offering new possibilities for artistic creation.
