Abstract

In Brazil, the use of photocopiers had a significant impact on the production of artists' books. While it facilitated the reproduction of publications in small print runs, it also encouraged experimentation with new media. To understand the importance of xerography in Brazilian art, this article analyzes the best-known publications and comments on some of the main exhibitions held in the 1970s and 1980s. Based on a database created by the author, it is the first survey of publications produced using xerox and demonstrates that their contribution to Brazilian art has been underestimated, considering that the most recent articles on xerography were published abroad and that we have not yet had any books or exhibitions dedicated to the subject in the last twenty years. The multiplied work of art had an impact on the artists' production method, on the circulation of their works and on their relationship with the market and museums.
