Abstract

This article is based on a record taken by portuguese photographer Armindo Cardoso on the occasion of the International Workers' Day celebrations, in May 1971, in Santiago, Chile. It is an image in which Salvador Allende appears centered behind a pulpit speaking to supporters and, in the background, a large panel, in which it is possible to observe some political flags of Popular Unity: “unity to nationalize copper, to nationalize the banking sector, for agrarian reform, against monopolies, against North American imperialism and for international solidarity”. The analysis presented aims to link these guidelines to the main cultural initiatives promoted throughout the thousand days of the popular government, taking as a reference the contribution of Mário Pedrosa during the critic's exile in the andean country, from 1970 to 1973.
