Abstract

The paper will focus on the analysis of Guido Crepax revolutionary comic book character Valentina that belongs to the golden age of the Italian comic-book genre fumetto. The aim is to explore whether Guido Crepax Valentina character was a "living doll" filling male fantasies of her creator or she was a woman empowered by her author struggling for many of the values of the women's culture that feminists today are trying to introduce into the mainstream. It also addresses research questions that focus on comic books and gender and empowerment at the decade of sexual liberation.

Through Valentina case study the present paper is going to study an approach on the concept of woman in comics, and touch the border of female empowerment issue in contemporary world taking in consideration that her revolutionary strong and independent figure was born in a society where women have been frequently viewed as passive and represented as inferior to men and where questions of sexuality were considered taboo. Despite the fact that she angered some feminists by the way she was portrayed as an object of male gaze or a damsel in distress, there is nothing anti-feminist about Valentina. The aim here is to uncover feminist themes in the stories of Valentina and to explore what empowered her and made her a contemporary icon of style and symbol of liberated women.

Olga Galeeva, IADE - Universidade Europeia

My name is Olga Galeeva. I am an illustrator and graphic designer from Moscow, Russia. I did my Masters on Design and Visual culture in IADE University and continue my education in the same institution by doing my PHD on Ilatian Comic books from 60s and 70s and representation of women.

Teresa Lousa, FBAUL - FCSH-CHAM

Teresa Lousa, nasceu em 1978, em Lisboa, licenciou-se em Filosofia na FCSH. O seu interesse por Estética e História da Arte conduziu-a ao Mestrado em Teorias da Arte na FBAUL, que a despertou para o interesse por temas e autores da Teoria da Arte Portuguesa, nomeadamente Francisco de Holanda, autor que foi o alvo do seu Doutoramento concluí­do em 2013. Lecciona Estética desde 2008 e apresenta diversas sessões temáticas ao 3º ciclo (doutoramento em Ciências da Arte e do Património) na FBAUL. Actualmente é investigadora integrada do CHAM onde colabora com o Sub-grupo Gerações Hispânicas coordenado pelo Professor José Esteves Pereira. Tem participado em múltiplos colóquios internacionais e escrito artigos e capí­tulos em antologias em torno de temas tão diversos como: Humanismo, Renascimento, Neoplatonismo, Furor Divino e Inspiração, Melancolia, Arte Macabra, Estética do Horror, Estética da Morte, Estética e Sagrado, Sublime, Teoria do Génio, Pluralismo estético, etc...

Flávio Almeida, IADE-U Instituto de Arte, Design e Empresa - Universitário : Lisboa, Lisboa

Formado em música pelo Instituto de Artes da UNESP e Designer Gráfico profissional desde 2002 atua em diferentes áreas, com especialização em mí­dia impressa, eletrônica e pós produção de imagens. Realizou trabalhos que lhe proporcionaram publicações e reconhecimento em paí­ses como Alemanha, Austrália, Espanha, Dinamarca, Brasil, China, França, Portugal, Japão, Inglaterra, Itália e para clientes como Computer Arts, MTV, Revista Raiz, Linotype, Die Gestalten Verlag, Experimenta Magazine. Mudou-se para Lisboa para fazer mestrado em Design e Cultura Visual no IADE com bolsa da ALBAN (Programa de Bolsas de Alto Ní­vel da União Europeia para a América Latina). Após conclusão do mestrado em 2009 foi convidado pelo IADE para lecionar ao longo dos anos cadeiras de Narrativa Visual, Projecto Multimédia na Licenciatura e Ví­deo Arte e Imagem Digital e Animação no Mestrado. Sua investigação de doutoramento entregue em 2014 foi integralmente financiada pela FCT. Em abril de 2015 defendeu sua tese, intitulada "Análise e Interpretação da Comunicação Gráfica Japonesa Contemporânea: o Kawaii, a Tipografia e o Flatness Interpretados Sob um Olhar Sociocultural, Estético e Histórico." obteve nota máxima pelo júri (muito bom com distinção por unanimidade).
