This article investigates the early years of Alfredo Volpi's career, spanning from the mid-1910s to the early 1920s, with a focus on the ways in which the painter operates with diverse modern references. The research develops through the formal and critical-historiographical analysis of some of his first canvases, articulating them with the cultural debate in São Paulo and the artist's training within the Italian immigrant community. The paper analyzes Volpi's modern characteristics three decades before his consecration in the 1950s, illuminating the aesthetic disputes that were reconfiguring the art scene in São Paulo at the beginning of the twentieth century
