The Pope and the Devil in the Land of the Sun
Artistic and Media Tensions from a Mural

This study analyzes the controversy surrounding the artistic mural in the external area of the School of Communication at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), which depicts a papal figure in contact with a demonic figure, sparking debates about freedom of artistic expression and religious intolerance. The research aims to understand the tensions surrounding the case, using a qualitative methodology based on documentary analysis of news reports and public demonstrations. Based on theories of contesting public art (Canclini, 2005) and aesthetics of imminence (Canclini, 2012), the investigation highlights how artistic interventions in public spaces can function as catalysts for debates about secularization, religious tolerance, and the limits of artistic provocation, contributing to the understanding of the processes of negotiation of values in plural societies.
