A Study on The Opening Ceremony of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games

Abstract

This study aims to explore the Greek national identity as depicted in the Opening Ceremony of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. The research employs a qualitative approach, relying on bibliographic and documentary surveys. It constitutes a case study within Peirce's semiotic framework (2017), analyzed using the “Analysis of Moving Images” method adapted by Silva (2019) from Rose (2015), supported by the Opening Ceremony Media Guide. The study analyzes the symbolic elements that represent the Greek national identity showcased in the ceremony.

Author Biographies

Bruno de Oliveira da Silva, Universidade do Vale do Itajaí­ - UNIVALI

Sou fotógrafo e pesquisador, possuo Licenciaturas em Artes Visuais e História pela Escola de Educação do Centro Universitário Internacional - UNINTER. Bacharelado em Turismo pela Escola de Artes, Comunicação e Hospitalidade - EACH da Universidade do Vale do Itajaí - UNIVALI, onde fui contemplado com o prêmio Mérito Estudantil devido à vivência de valores e atitudes éticas no contexto acadêmico. Especialização em Artes (Lato Sensu) terminalidade em Ensino e Percursos Poéticos pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas - UFPel. Mestrado e Doutorado em Turismo pela UNIVALI com ambos os projetos de pesquisa financiados pela Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES. Faço parte da International Society for Education Through Art - InSEA vinculada à United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - UNESCO. A partir das conexões transdisciplinares de minha formação, desenvolvo pesquisas no campo dos estudos visuais e culturais, tendo como principais objetos de investigação: produções fotográficas e audiovisuais. Meus trabalhos buscam enfatizar a produção heurística e a reflexão crítica sobre as imagens, e compõem um acervo acadêmico com produções difundidas em periódicos de países como Brasil, Argentina, Colômbia, Equador, Portugal e Espanha. Realizei cursos nacionais e internacionais, e obtive certificações de importantes instituições de arte e ensino no mundo como o Museum of Modern Art - MoMA e Royal Holloway, University of London. Participei de exposições coletivas, e recebi premiações por trabalhos literários, fotográficos e audiovisuais dentre as quais, fui intitulado pela Equipe de Sustentabilidade dos Jogos Olímpicos Rio 2016 como um multiplicador de comportamentos sustentáveis pelo mundo, em decorrência da sensibilização socioambiental presente nas produções. Em 2022, fui um dos vencedores na categoria de fotografia da Olimpíada das Artes Visuais, promovida pela Fundação Nacional de Artes - FUNARTE. Em 2023, realizei a direção geral e artística do documentário [A/r/tógrafo Viajante e a Fotografia Artística nas Missões Jesuíticas Guaranis], o qual consiste no registro audiovisual da minha defesa doutoral.
