Abstract

The question about a transformation of the self that is moves away of the juridical model requires, for Foucault, more than an argument leading to an affirmative answer. Yes is not enough. The argument begins before the question, forming part of the posing of the question itself. Thus, the possibility of this transformation of the self requires the investigation of the three volumes of The History of Sexuality. Even with the change in project made between volumes I and II, the first remains fundamental to understanding the birth of the problematization of the juridical model. The second volume, which deals with the 6th and 3rd centuries BC (Classical Greece), brings another model, still rudimentary, which proposes the exercise of self-control. The third volume, which deals with the 1st and 2nd centuries AD (Greco-Roman world), exposes a more perfected model that, even though it has reference to the previous one, surpasses it, by introducing a notion of reciprocity in the relationship with oneself, which results in care of the self.
