Abstract

For Thomas Aquinas, moral philosophy is a practical science. However, the Portuguese John of Saint Thomas (1589-1644), one of the most respected followers of Thomas Aquinas, argued that moral philosophy can be a speculative science. In this article, I will seek to expose this argumentation of John of Saint Thomas, but I also intend to treat of three questions: (1) was John the only one to defend that thesis? (2) How has that thesis influenced Jacques Maritain (1882-1973) and how has Jacques Maritain influenced other students of Thomas Aquinas? (3) And how is the position of Thomas Aquinas to be understood? The major contribution of this article will consist in the approach to the third question, taking Thomas Aquinas's Commentary on the Nicomachean Ethics as the main source to decide it.
