Lead is a neurotoxic heavy metal that can cause a number of health problems and prolonged exposure to this metal can lead to anemia, fatigue, headache, memory loss, muscle weakness, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, seizures and psychiatric problems. Studies indicate that police officers are exposed to high levels of lead, especially shooting instructors who work in closed ranges, due to the release of the metal into the atmosphere when firing firearms. The present work highlighted the lack of regulation and standardization for shooting ranges in Brazil, highlighting that this reality contrasts with that of other countries, where there are specific guidelines and standards for the construction, operation and inspection of these locations. In Brazil, existing regulations are insufficient and do not establish minimum safety parameters, with no technical criteria for inspection. Furthermore, there are no specific technical standards for the construction and operation of shooting ranges. The lack of regulation and standardization increases the risks of exposure to lead, therefore, it is suggested that specific standards be created for shooting ranges in the country, based on technical and evaluative studies, which should establish minimum safety parameters, such as mandatory use of personal protective equipment, maintenance of a clean and well-ventilated work environment, in addition to periodic medical examinations for security professionals.
