Abstract

This study delves into the intricate relationship between the evolutionary approach to innovation and investments in Research and Development (R&D) in 21st-century Brazil. Drawing on theories that apply evolutionary principles to economics, it underscores the pivotal role of cumulative innovation fueled by R&D investments in driving economic growth. Through an extensive bibliographic review, the study demonstrates the significant impact of R&D investments on patenting rates and the facilitation of technological change. This nexus between investments in research and development and innovation stands as a critical driver for enhancing productivity and fostering sustained economic growth over the long term. The momentum of cumulative innovation, propelled by these investments, lays a sturdy groundwork for sustainable economic development, enabling the ongoing creation and refinement of products, processes, and services. Nevertheless, a comparative analysis of R&D expenditures in Brazil against other nations reveals an unsettling reality. Despite its status among the world's leading economies, Brazil falls notably short in R&D investment, both in absolute terms and as a percentage of GDP, when compared to its counterparts. This glaring disparity places the country in a challenging position concerning innovation capacity and global competitiveness. Considering these findings, the study advocates for Brazil to embrace policies and strategies that foster more robust investments in R&D, thereby igniting innovation and propelling economic growth within the nation.
