Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to describe the methodology used to evaluate the reuse of damaged solar photovoltaic modules during the construction phase of a solar farm. At this stage, solar modules may present various physical damages (broken upper glass, frames, cables, connectors, etc.) or internal electrical damages (hot spots, damaged cells, short circuit, among others). Generally, these modules are discarded because the energy generation requirements are very high, making their use unfeasible and encouraging their replacement. In most solar park constructions, before starting the assembly of the modules, electroluminescence tests are carried out, where the modules with damaged cells are discarded. Then, once the approved modules have been installed, an I-V curve is plotted, and if any of the modules show any type of failure, they are also discarded. In most cases, this type of quality control practice results in a significant number of modules being separated or out of use. In addition to this, the devices that are physically damaged during assembly in their respective support structures are also accounted for, either due to handling errors or due to the effect of some climatic/meteorological event (high speed wind gusts during assembly or possible storms).
