This article aims to present the main concepts and elements of the series “Approximations of the self: Afro-Brazilian visualities” presented in 2020-2022 through a virtual exhibition. The study deals with Afro-Brazilian culture, presented through photographic references from the 19th century together with photographic devices. Aiming to understand how I (Dis)discover myself through the molds that poetry evokes in me, starting from identity crises when understanding myself as a black person in Brazil. This study developed from experiments with digital cameras, expanded techniques in engraving, weaving connections between personal and artistic processes through the search for (Dis)covering and giving new meaning to looking at oneself from looking at others. With this, the research allows the confrontation between past and present through the juxtaposition of visuals from photographs from the 19th century and discusses the origins of Afro-Brazilian narratives that tell the history of the black population from another perspective.
