This paper analyzes the concept of visual hybridity in the work of artists Mauricio Dias and Walter Riedweg, with emphasis on the piece Romance Archive (2018). It investigates how the articulation between different media and techniques contributes to the construction of a hybrid visual style. Romance Archive is based on the archive of photographer Charles Hovland, whose images are reinterpreted by the artists through a re-recording process that uses a kaleidoscope attached to the camera, fragmenting and reorganizing the photographed bodies. The research engages with Arlindo Machado’s reflections on hybridity in the arts, as well as with Susan Sontag’s discussions on style and representation in contemporary art. It also draws on the concept of cinematic style to understand how framing, focus, and editing are incorporated into a production presented as a video installation.
