Abstract

This research aims to investigate how academics solve activities that involve cognitive transformations of treatment and conversion and what are the mobilized registers by them, as well as listing which methods are chosen to solve linear systems. To answer the general objective, the text discusses about the theory of Registers of Semiotic Representation, the theoretical basis to the research. This is a qualitative research defined as a case study. The participants in this research are academics from the Mathematics, Physics and Economics Sciences Degree, from Linear Algebra I and II courses in the second half of 2018. The data were produced from two activities involving the content already mentioned. In the analysis regarding the Registers of Semiotic Representation, the resolutions of the academics showed the registers of representation in natural language, algebraic, matrix and finally, the graphic, in that order. By analyzing the methods presented for solving linear systems, it was identified that in both classes the methods chosen were in the majority Substitution and Scaling/Gaussian Elimination.
