Abstract

Introduction: Psychological factors are related to the development of some oral and maxillofacial disorders, including temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this study was to assess, through a literature review, the relationship between negative emotional states and temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) in university students. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted, examining original articles published from 2012 to 2023 in PubMed, Scielo, Lilacs, and Google Scholar databases. Eligibility criteria included studies investigating the relationship between negative emotional states and TMD in university students. Results: Eight studies were synthesized, revealing a positive correlation between negative emotional states and TMD. Prevalence was higher among female students in the eighth to tenth semester (18 to 47 years old). Discussion: Factors such as intense study pace, high academic expectations, and competition were associated with this relationship. These factors may induce stress, anxiety, overload, and depression, directly contributing to the development or exacerbation of TMD symptoms. Conclusion: Within the study's limitations, negative emotional states and the lifestyle of students are closely linked to etiological factors and the exacerbation of TMD symptoms, emphasizing their significant influence on the academic population.
