This article presents and discusses the image, reality and the teaching of the atom in the light of the epistemological study of the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962). Using a qualitative approach and Bachelard's epistemological contributions as a theoretical reference, the aim was to investigate what images are and what their relationship is with the concept of representation. In addition, we sought to understand why we construct images by providing a brief bibliographical description of the relationship between images and the history of the development of atomism. Finally, we reflected on the implications and contributions of the use of images for Science Teaching, specifically Physics Teaching, based on Bachelard's pedagogical and philosophical conceptions of teaching through images.
