Abstract

Environmental awareness and addressing issues related to the environment are not just a global trend, but an urgent need due to the unsustainability of the current development model. The Federal Institute Sudeste de Minas Gerais, Campus Rio Pomba, started the Environmental Technician course in 2008 with the intention of training qualified professionals to deal with issues of environmental management, conservation of natural resources and public policies at municipal and regional level. However, a reduction in interest in the course has recently been observed, despite the high demand for courses in this area. This raises the central question: how graduates and students perceive the importance of the Environmental Technical Course; how graduates apply the skills and knowledge acquired on the course in their daily lives and what the impacts of the course are on their trajectories and on local and regional development. This study's main objective is to diagnose and highlight the importance of the Environmental Technician course, through the recovery of memories of graduates and environmental authorities in the municipality. The purpose is to highlight the relevance of both these professionals and the course itself to promote the sustainable development of the municipality and the region. Even with growing environmental awareness and increased demand for professionals in this area, we have observed a decrease in demand for certain course modalities over time. This contradiction encourages us to reflect on how the course's target audience perceives its relevance, how graduates apply their knowledge in everyday life and what the impact of these professionals is on local and regional development. The information obtained provided a deeper understanding of the trajectory of this course, revealing its dynamic and adaptable nature.
