Female incarceration in Brazil has been grown in dizzying way and its consequences must be seen because the prison system is an environment historically not designed for women. Thus, the present research aimed to identify what are the adversities found by women deprived from their liberty in maintaining the maternal bon. In this way a qualitative study was carried out of the narrative literature type. Among the results found many adversities were found, such as the feeling of failure as a mother, double punishment for the crime and due the social role as a mother who ends up limiting herself within prison, associated to a hard choice of keeping the child within the prison environment or by choosing to pass on the child care to third parties. Both choices bring up a series of worries and anguish to the to the mothers and consequences to the development of those children. The study concluded that there is no unanimity in that decision: some women believe that it is better to keep the child with themselves because they understand that the maternal bond disruption could be more harmful while others see the separation as the best choice to enable the child to develop outside the prison environment.
