Abstract

This article analyzes perceptions of undergraduate teacher education programs and teacher training, focusing on the discipline of History, based on the study presented in one of the authors’ Professional Master's dissertation in Education, entitled The History of the Municipality of Anchieta/ES in the Classroom: A Study with History Teachers in the Final Years of Elementary School. The study reveals a significant weakness in the initial education of History teachers regarding local history and cultural heritage, demonstrating that the competencies required to work with these themes are often acquired through teaching practice, continuing education, and in-service training. It also highlights the potential of local history as a pedagogical strategy for understanding students’ realities, fostering historical consciousness, and contributing to the construction of both individual and collective identities. The results further reveal challenges related to the availability of teaching materials, the inclusion of this theme in the school curriculum, and the lack of resources for fieldwork activities focused on local history.
