Medical students face an environment of constant fatigue and stress due to the high workload and academic demands, accentuated by extracurricular activities in the search for qualifications. Such factors can trigger sleep deprivation, having serious consequences on the person's life, reverberating in the growing notoriety in the scientific debate. The objective of the research was to evaluate the quality of sleep of medical students at Uniredentor/Afya – Itaperuna/RJ, highlighting the effects of sleep deprivation on health, quality of life and, consequently, the academic performance of this population. A questionnaire based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was applied, highlighting the following sociodemographic data: female, aged 22 to 25, attending internship and living alone. Regarding sleep, 73.3% of students declare it to be of poor quality, highlighting the insufficient quantitative aspect of hours slept each night. As these findings are relevant to the quality of life and academic performance, the research highlights the need for measures aimed at improving the sleep of medical students studied, and it is important to start by raising awareness among this public about the importance of adequate sleep, the which extends to other academics.
