Abstract

The changes in the size and structure of the population in Luanda, resulting from large migratory flows and the reproductive habits of the populations that arrived in this province, which occurred before and after the peace agreements in 2002, have significantly influenced the rapid demographic growth of the region. However, this growth, combined with the housing shortage, led to land occupation processes in the peri-urban and peripheral areas of the province, giving rise to several critical informal settlements. It is within this context that the Chendovava neighborhood emerges on Luanda's urban scene as a self-produced neighborhood, with a high population density, a large proportion of unemployed young people, extreme poverty, lack of collective social infrastructure, among other issues. For this reason, the research aims to understand the influence of demographic growth on the process of creating critical informal neighborhoods in Luanda. From a methodological perspective, the research is inductive, qualitative in nature, and uses a case study as the research approach..
