Abstract

One of the areas covered by the basic sanitation is the sewage collection and, later, the sewage treatment, which in most Brazilian cities is done in sewage treatment stations called STS. One of the treatments adopted in the stations is the anaerobic treatment, which presents an important characteristic: the emission of odorous gases, as for example, the hydrogen sulfide gas, is a situation that happens in the city of Itumbiara in Goiás. These odors can be noticed within a certain radius of influence as of the station, causing discomfort to the population. The population growth around the station and the wind propagation direction are factors that can promote the susceptibility to the effect of the hydrogen sulfide gas on the inhabitants. This article aimed to conduct a qualitative approach having as a focus the STS location, analysing the presence of urbanized areas and the impacts caused by the hydrogen sulfide gas in the surroundings, based on a radius of influence. A software to elaborate maps and get satellite images, as well as literature to obtain the radius of influence and specific sources to adopt the wind direction were used in the methodology. As a result, there is an urban sprawl that is directed to the STS surrounding areas, furthermore the prevailing winds impact in the propagation of the odors to the regions where there is the presence of inhabitants. It was concluded that there are constructions within the radius of influence of the STS, which are susceptible to the action of the hydrogen sulfide gas.
