ANÁLISE DO PROCESSO DE REGENERAÇÃO E DESMATAMENTO DA MATA ATL NTICA NO MUNICÍPIO DE CAMPO MOURÃO – PR

Abstract

Understanding the dynamics of the Atlantic Forest is essential for developing public policies that aim at preserving and conserving ecosystems and biodiversity. To analyze the most recent forest dynamics, the effects of legal tools to protect the Atlantic Forest and recent political transformations, primary data on native vegetation and land cover are essential. The aim of this paper is to analyze, quantitatively, if the deforestation process remains progressive or if there is an incidence of regeneration of the Atlantic Forest biome between 2018 and 2021 in the municipality of Campo Mourão - PR. Sentinel 2A imagery data were use and classified using the Random Forest algorithm in Google Earth Engine. The classification results were evaluate using the kappa index. The results demonstrate that the Campo Mourão is undergoing a forest transition from net loss to net gain in native tree cover (increase of 18.64 km²). However, the vegetation is more fragmented and isolated. Furthermore, we point out that the rejuvenation of the native vegetation cover may not mean qualitative gains in terms of biodiversity.
